The "26 year-olds" Have Arrived

Hello! Today we arrived at Gaston, and we have had a great time getting to know each other and familiarizing ourselves with the community.  When we first entered into the house, we were surprised by this simple life. We had 13 people living in two rooms and sharing two bathrooms, so we quickly learned to adjust to a simple living style. And we are quite sure the following days will be uncertain and full of challenges and unforgettable memories!

At the school, we met with Mr. Muma, who is a teacher at KIPP Charter School, and he gave us a tour around all three schools - primary, middle, and high. He told us how teachers are very committed to the students during their time teaching, but the teacher turnover rate is also very high. This is interesting because it makes us wonder how committed the teachers actually are under the charter system. In our time here, we would like to learn more about the student-teacher relationships at the school.

During our reflection at the end of the night, we discussed what we knew about urban education and identified some questions that we had. Through our experience, we would like to learn about students' opinions to the charter system, the possibility of increasing government funding of the charter system, and the school's role in students' personal and academic success.

As our final activity of the evening, we established community guidelines for the experience, and we are looking to create an open-minded and inclusive environment where we are free to share our thoughts without concern. Today has been a great introduction to Gaston, and we look forward to the rest of the trip.
